Are you own small land area for fish farming? Are you not getting much benefit from fish culture? Don't worry; you can earn more income with intensive fish culture techniques.
Now you might be thinking of how it differs from standard fish farming, right? In ordinary ponds, fish stocks are like 200 fish per cent. In intensive fish culture, you can add more fish stocks. For example, we can raise around 1500 fish in 1 cent, but we need do proper filtration and maintenance. Nowadays fish culture in an aquaponics system is also common. You need to check following things before starting the fish culture.

Setup ponds with tarpaulin sheets

Nowadays fish farming in tarpaulin ponds is popular because tanks setup cost is too cheap compared to cement, fibre tanks. Cement tank construction cost is more compared to tarpaulin, but it will provide more life to your tanks. First, you need to choose a place in your backyard to construct tank.  Make sure you are setting up the ponds in a location where you can supply water easily. Tarpaulin sheets with more than 200 gsm can assure a lifetime of min 6 to 7 years.

Test and stabilise your pond water ph

Once you finish with tank construction and water filling, you should test your water ph level. Ph level of 7 to 8.5 is ideal for fish farming. If it is more or less than mentioned level, we should adopt necessary steps to balance it. Cement tank ph will be very high initially. It will take minimum three months and several water changes to keep the water ph level stable in the concrete tank. You can use ph testing kit, litmus paper, ph solution available in the market to test water ph at home. Lime treatment is done to raise water ph. If the ph is high, use light acids like vinegar to bring the ph down.

Supply more oxygen for your fishes

As I mentioned earlier, we need to supply more oxygen as the stock quantity is more in intensive fish farming. Buy a good oxygen pump, aerator available in the market for continuous oxygen supply.

Do continuous filtration or water changes

We should do proper filtering of water to remove fish waste from the tank. Otherwise, nitrite produced by fish will get converted to ammonia which is toxic to the fishes. You can make trickling filters or setup aquaponics to remove wastes. Nitrifying bacteria formed in this biological filter will convert nitrite to nitrate and also add more oxygen to water.

Protect your fishes from predators

Make sure you add overflow pipes, nets, shades in your fish tanks to protect your fish from the predator. Adding nets will also help you to protect your tanks from leaf and other wastes. Using shade net will help to reduce sunlight, which helps in maintaining water temperature and reduce algae formation.

Choose a fish for your pond

Fish that can quickly raise in intensive fish farming are gift tilapia, red belly, carp, catfish, Carla, rohu etc. Lots of protein-rich fish food are available in the market which can help you to raise your fish in 6 months time. Make sure you are not overfeeding your fishes, which will make your water worse. You should feed 5% weight of fish as feed daily.

Conclusion

Fish farming methods have been changed a lot in recent years. Peoples are making a huge profit from aquaponics and intensive fish culture techniques. But, intensive fish culture requires more care and attention. So, if you are interested in fish farming and own less land, you can earn more with this techniques.
