pH stand for potential of hydrogen. It is a measure of acidity or alkalinity of a solution. pH value range from 0 to 14. pH value of 0 means solution has a heavy concentration of acid, and pH 14 represents the most alkaline solution.  pH value of pure water is 7 and value seven means water is neutral.

As per logarithmic table, pH 2 is ten times acidic than pH 3, and 100 times more acidic than pH 4. pH 12 is ten times alkaline than pH 11, and 100 times more alkaline than pH 10.

Aquarium hobbyists and fish farmers used to test pH of water before introducing fish in tanks. Majority of fishes do not survive in acidic water, so we need to balance the water before adding fishes.

We can test pH of the water quickly at home using a pH meter or universal indicator chart with pH solution, or litmus paper test.

pH value chart

pH table gives you a clear picture of ph values of the different solution.

Solution pH value
pH value of water 7
pH value of milk 6.5 - 6.7
pH value of curd 4.5 - 5.5
pH value of vinegar 2.0 - 3.0
pH value of limewater 12.4
pH value of Lime juice 2.0 - 3.0
pH value of tomato juice 4.1- 4.6
pH value of gastric juice 1.5 - 3.5
pH value of fresh cow milk 6.5 - 6.7
pH value of blood 7.35 - 7.45
pH value of urine 6.0
ph value of saliva 6.5 - 7.5
ph value of Mango juice 5.8 - 6.0
